Default Subway Station : Original & Revisited

Shot in Milan.

P.S. :
- levels
- perspective correction
- bw
- curves
- some sharpening on the tracks

Maybe a little bit overexposed on the right.

cool picture!
I like subway and urban pictures very much.
so this is just my taste.
The b/w is really good for that shot.

Thanx Kex.

I always try a BW when the original colours are not that intersting and attention is mainly on lines and shapes.

its a nice shot. needs to be knocked down in the brightness area. the right side is pretty much blown out. the subway station is not that bright. don't give up atmosphere for attempted detail. you need to strike a balance.

Great picture. I like it as it is. I can not imagine the effect that sjms describes, so it would be nice to see. Maybe it would be better, who knows?
Very cool now, though...

Srgio,

I have to agree with your original statement that the right side is a bit overexposed.

The lines are very eye-catching and yes, I totally agree that B/W is the best mode for this. I can't imagine the colors of an underground station being all that exciting.

try spending 20 years riding the NYC subway then you might see what i mean. i have also ridden on the milan system 3 times this between spring and summer this year. its just not that bright in there.

its not an effect. it looks overexposed. try manual brightness/contrast sliders its like working with an enlarger in a darkroom different exposures and different contrast grades of paper. you can then bring in the detail on the right and also on the columns.

choose your white point then work down from there. black and white is much harder then color to produce traditionally and digitally. your working in tonality to produce atmosphere. it's easier if you spent time in a real darkroom but not much.

Default Subway Station : OIriginal and Review

sjms, you are right !
Milan subways n° 1 and 2 are really dark and they do not put you in a god mood at all !
However more recent subways have become mnore lighter : n°3 and finally n° 4, where you may almost risk to be blinded.

Nevertheless youtr suggestions on the shot are good.

I wasn't able to fix all of the tones with levels and curves in a global way, so the original shot was a kind of trade-off.

I had to apply what in the dark-room I think is supposed to be named masks.

So, i selected the right part ( lazo and algebric addition and substration of elliptic selections ) and I lowered the brightness and enchanced the contrast.
I then reapplied the automatic levels to get the maximum tonal dynamics.

Here it comes :

Hmmmm
difficult..
I think i still like the first one the best..
Because on that picture the white's are the same.. on he left and the right..

But the editing looks really natural!

like them both
