My understanding of the story is that the church, to alleviate money issues over the years, has sold off the land between the church structure and the city owned street, thus allowing shops to build up around the structure.

This first pic shows the doors in behind the row of shops on St Catherine Street.

and last, this is another church down the street (the name escapes me) where the same thing happened but in recent years they tore down the shops, renovated the church, and excavated a shopping mall underneath. You can see the entrance to the underground in the lower left.
There's a place within the mall that they have posted pictures and details of the construction. Very cool.
