Default NimH charger for canon powershot

I just bought a Hahnel charger with 4 NimH AA batteries for my brand new Canon powershot A80, then I noticed that the user handbook specifically say to only use canon NimH batteries with a canon charger (CBK-100, apparently) or else it might damage the camera! Is there really a risk or canon just want to sell their own stuff?

canon does not manufacturer their batteries. they are standard nimh batteries. so any reasonable quality charger and nimh battery combination will do the job. of course you want to get good quality products. i use Maha batteries and chargers. they make that statement to absolve themselves of liability in using any other brand. its their "get out of jail free" statement. should a battery leak (which all 20 or so of mine have not ever and i have gone through a few more then that) they will not be held responsible for the damage to your camera.
