Homeland Security: An Ode to The Duke

I felt so much safer a long while back

When every bad guy was dressed in black

It didn't take luck, it wasn't a fluke

To put ‘em away you just called the Duke

Sat tall in the saddle, rode hard ore the range

Insult a lady, he'll your nose rearrange

He spoke very little; when he did it was plain

The silver screen hero, I'm talkin' John Wayne

Irresistible he was to the gals, one and all

Did he ever smooth-talk them, not that I can recall

Fought villains all day, stayed on watch through the night

If there ever was passion it was kept out of sight

Poor Brad Pitt and the rest of today's screen heros

When a big fight breaks out they're in bed without clothes

They survive those car crashes with no hair out of place

Now I can't see the action, screens filled with their face

No, I don't sleep as soundly since John Wayne has died

Tend to worry at airports, me with both shoes untied

Look around to see who looks to be mad or manic

Could my Listerine bottle be the cause for such panic

Yes, John Wayne I've been missing more lately it seems

He'd a caught that Osama, put a stop to his schemes

Without Duke will we ever get out of Iraq?

It's those kind of thoughts give me panic attack

Life was simpler then, leastwise we could escape

Two bucks with popcorn, watch our hero's escape

Now we turn on the tube, surf the channels galore

There's no happy endings, its all blood and gore

I like the photos and enjoyed readingyour poem, Walter. The good'ol Sheriffs, they got a scratch here, a scuff there but in the end, they always won against the bad guys. Times are different, for sure. Every now and then, my Father used to take me to the airport to watch the planes take off and land. We did not have to be x-ray'ed or take offour shoes. We would get so close that I felt I could almost touch those planes. Today, taking my son to the airport to watch airplanes is out of the question for he would not be able to see any planes, just restaurants and shops.

Great photos of the statue. Do you have any that show more of the flag?

I like the poetry, also.

Walter,

It just so happens that my Mother's favorite actor is John Wayne. As you indicated so eloquently in your ode to Wayne, he brooked no nonsense and you knew where he stood. None of this sissy situational morality stuff. Yes, times were simpler then.

Loved the first shot of the "Duke" with the flag in the background.

Aloha

Cal, you asked for a better shot of the flag. So, I flew back to Orange County just to take this shot. :-)Actually, I had a business trip that took me there this week and I remembered your request - soI snapped this one.

Nice job, Walter! You mean you didn't make a special trip just for me? I'm hurt. Just kidding! Thanks for showing us the true magnitude of that flag.
