First one from the boat, we missed the peak colors by about 5 days Wind and rain right before we got there dropped most of the leaves.

Second one you can see how many leaves are on the ground already and how few are left on the trees.

From a technical standpoint, the second shot is better. The color balance is off on the first shot. The sky color is wrong. I suspect your white balance wasn't set correctly.

Both shots have good composition.

I know what it is like as far a timing is concerned. The colors can be at their peak one day, and a wind or rain storm during the night strips them.

What kind of trees predominate in your area? I have noticed that the old growth trees in the Portland area are not very spectacular. However the landscaping trees are on fire, especially maples, sycamores, and other hardwoods. Those trees are not native to this area but seem to thrive, nonetheless.

The second shot really speaks to the heart. Lovely job.

Thanks guys, I do prefer the second shot too, wonder why:-). The first one, looking at it again, I can see what you mean Cal, there wasn't much to the sky and I think I tried a little too hard to pull a little contrast out of it. Trees at the lake are mostly Pine trees, paper birch and red oak. It did look really nice in some places with the evergreen, yellow of the birch and maroon from the oak, just wish I was able to capture a good shot of it.
