Aren't they called Fostner bits? For making a flat bottom hole?

That's close enough. It is called a Forstner bit. It drills a hole in wood with a flat bottom except for the pilot point. The sides of the hole are smooth and the chance of splitting the wood are much less than with a conventional twist drill bit.
