Warning: If you see some "art" on one of these walls that offends I apologies. I tried to crop so as to leave anything I could see out, but if you zoom you still may find something I missed.

This is what is left of the old Washington Western State Mental Hospital. It was built on a hill overlooking a valley and lake. When it was built at the turn of the last century it was considered a modern progressive place. Most "residents" were housed in smaller out buildings. They would work on the farm that helped offset the price of running the hospital. They could also work on crafts or walk around the lake. The ones that had the more serious problems were "treated" here. With more modern treatments more buildings were built in the valley and this was abandoned and the farmland was turned into parkland. The building became bad place for teenagers, drugs, and other undesirable things so in the 70s they knocked most of it down. Before the trees grew higher then the building and they knocked it down it was spooky place to look at from the valley. Now teenagers and others try what they think is art.

I did see the building before most of it was knocked down. From the front it was kind of impressive in its time. It had a big lawn with and big swiping circular drive and oak trees in the center. You would drive past the lake and up the hill. A very pretty, peaceful restful to drive up too.

I usually don't photograph in black and white but this seemed to call for it.

Very interesting. And, yes, it does seem to call for b&w.

Daz,

You're right, the BW treatment matches the ambience quite well.
