During his rise to power,King Kamehamehaordered the construction ofthis extremely large Heiau (walled stone temple) as part of his plan to fulfill the prophecies surrounding the eventual unification of the islands under his rule.

It is one of the best examples of Polynesian stone building construction using smooth lava rocks which were obtained from a site over twenty miles away. The stones were passed hand to hand using a chain of workers.

Heiaus were similar to temples and were held in high esteem by the Hawaiians.
