This is "El Castillo", the principal building at Chichen Itza. The step-sides create an undulating serpent shadow along the angled walls forming the step sections at the solstice. the bottom of the stair edges have a carved serpent head, and the top has the tails. The shadow connects them.

Each side of the temple has 365 steps to the top, matching the Mayan calendar. There are 52 blocks that make up the terraces on the main building facade, matching the "life-cycle" years of the calendar. (also matching modern weeks, apparently a coincidence)

This is an overview of the ruins at Tulum. This is located right at the east coast, Carribian is directly behind this city. This is the only Mayan city that was still in use when the Spanish invaded this country.
