This is the ruins site at Ek Balam. (300-500 AD). When Mayan leaders changed, the custom was for the new leader to build his temples on top of the previous structures. They have found several "layers" of buildings at several sites.

At this site, much of the top layer of structures were overgrown by the forest. When the big huricane struck, in 2005, some trees knocked over on the top of this building opened a hole in the structure that revealed nearly perfectly preserve carvings from an earlier structure. Today, excavated, about two-thirds of the way up this giant stairway, under the thached roof, one finds amazing carvings, un-touched for many centuries....

Here's a closeup of part of the carvings...this is the main entrance to the temple. It is the mouth of a monster. Large bottom teeth at the bottom of the image, with the top teeth, eyes, etc above the opening. You can see a woman, seated, in one of the monster's eyes.
