An archive shot from the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. It's where the Viking Uig Chessmen were discovered http://www.nms.ac.uk/lewischessmen.aspx.

Er...Rays?...What rays?

Beautiful shot. The chess figures reference puzzles me. I know that some beautifully carved warriors were found in China not too long ago...an entire army of them! I am also familiar with the carvings on Easter Island. So what and where are the figures you refer to?

Cal

cal, the figures are described in the link alan provided.

also, cal, i agree - the terra cotta army in China and the Moai on Easter Island are pretty amazing. If i recall correctly, the terra cotta army was assembled to protect an emperor's tomb.

Nice shot, alan!!

Here's the replica Viking chessman which we own. The complete chess sets of resin replicas are very beautiful, but way out of my price bracket (32x out, obviously).

It's a source of annoyance to the islanders that The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has a few of the originals, the British Museum in London has most of them, but the excellent Museum of the Isles in Stornoway, Lewis, has to make do with ones like mine.

Regards, Alan

P.S. My family say it reminds them of me.

My chessman image was by way of a replyto a question, and we have discovered, in this challenge particularly, that tastes vary widely. So I hope I can be allowed this version, my 'second' post in this submission. It's only a little one!

It'sfor those who like the more dramatic versions we've seen this couple of weeks. It's interesting that I remember both the dramatic sky and the foreground detail quite nicely, but can't put both in a shot without cheating. That's the human eye for you, cheating all the time.
