I love the idea of this challenge, but I REALLY didn't like my first tries. So, I tried a couple of weird angles and strange camera settings. This was the result.

Very interesting. I think it is a flashlight or part of a battery operated lantern of some kind with very weak batteries.

Katrina and I are with Cal on this one. The reflector end of a flashlight.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it's the bell of a trumpet, trombone, tuba, or something similar

Mugmar look closer. That's definitely a light bulb in the center and it looks like reflections of the filament around it. I think the confusing thing is that the white balance is way off.

Cal, upon further review, I have to agree with you. The gold/brass color throws one off a bit.

Cal, you were right on target with your first feelings. It is a flashlight with a very weak battery. The shot was taken at about a 45-degree angle. Adding to the odd lighting, though, was a flourescent overhead fixture, an f-stop of 29, a 1/4000th shutter speed, and the fact that the lens of the flashlight, my Ryobi utility light, was badly scratched up.

I just kept playing with different settings.
