I saw one of those in Liverpool on Wednesday. We wondered whether it drove across the Mersey as well as round the city streets.

AHA ! A Duck sighting ! (WWII DUKW ambphbious vehicle) And I was going to make my way to downtown Hot Springs to shoot one of these this weekend.

These are popular with the tourists in the summer in Hot Springs, although I can't imagine anything more unpleasant than riding through a congested downtown area in hundred degree weather while being bombarded with recorded commercials for tourist attractions.

Nice shot, Tullio.

Tullio,

I have to build up enough courage to ride of these. I've seen them in NYC, Boston, Chicago, and Honolulu. As remnants of WWII one wonders how muh longer they can hold out.

Good perspective.

Aloha

Cool vehicle. Looks like the lady in the back left corner is sleeping. Maybe she's been on the tour before.:-)

We have these in Boston, although I've never been on one. Maybe in a few weeks when my parents come to visit.

I saw one in Seattle and another in LaHaina, Hawaii. Interesting view and great shot.

Thank you all for commenting.

Selvin, they are pretty safe to ride on (at least the ones in London). Well, over there theydon't drive faster than 20 mph because of the horrendous traffic!

Selvin, I share your trepidation. They are remarkably durable craft, but we had one sink in Lake Hamilton, near Hot Springs, in 1999 with a full load of tourists a few years ago. 13 of the 21 people aboard drowned. The culprit was said to be a faulty drive shaft seal.

The DUKW's have been around a long time and are generally very safe, but they have to be properly maintained, particularly for the water crossings.
