This isn't a great picture. It was taken several years ago with a point and shoot camera and then scanned recently. All the pictures taken on our trip to Germany, Austria and Italy had begun to fade, the negatives were lost - so I scanned the entire album to preserve what I could.

Anyway, this picture is from (of course) Venice. It is the Bridge of Sighs located between the Doges Palace andthe Prison. There are several interpretations of how it got it's name including that the prisonners would sigh as they crossed the bridge after being sentenced in the Doges Palace on their way to prison. Another is that if two lovers kissed under the bridge, they would be married within the year.

The transportation is the gondola. For those who have never been, the only motorized form of transportation in Venice is in the canals - although the gondola is people powered.

A view of the Grand Canal with water taxis, boats moving goods, private craft and gondolas waiting for a fare. It was a cloudy, overcast day so the sky and water are washed out.

Yesterday your shots of Venice sure brought back some good memories. I spent many times there. I especially like your shot of the Grand Canal. I hope you dont mind if I brighten it up a bit.

Your fix certainly looks better than my dull cloudy skies and murkey water. I loved Venice.

yesterday, wonderful photos. I especially like the Bridge of Sighs.

nhmom, I share with you a desire to someday see the city. Couldn't help envying my son a few years ago....he celebrated his 21st birthday sipping on a bottle of fine wine at a sidewalk cafe on one of the bridges over the canals. (Of course he capped the celebration by getting a speeding ticket in a rented boat.)
