My first car was an old one of these, mostly rusty red, bought when I was 18 for 45 ukpounds (not very much) and sold for 34 pounds about 6 months later. It was supposed to do 76mpg, but really did about 35, on a 300cc single cylinder. The gear shift lever stuck out of the wall on your right hand side, and it occasionally came out in your hand.

I took it to my last few weeks of grammar school. As a 'swot' and Head Boy, I was a suitable target for merry pranks, and used to come out and find it facing the opposite way from where I'd left it. While commuting home in it in the snow from mypre-university job, it was uncontrollable. At the best of times it steered like a boat. I spun it and rolled it on to its side. A passer-by put it upright with me still inside it,thereby stemming the shower of sparks from the battery under my seat contacting the seat springs. I just carried straight on home without further mishap. This was the closest I'm ever likely to get to owning a BMW.

This is not a fib. You couldn't make it up.
