Ha, about a 100 years ago I rode an old green trolly down the streets of Toronto, in your area of the world. I remember it being shakey and scary.

You must be thinking of another city. Ours have always been the color you see in the pic. The newer slimmer ones are more red and less maroon.

I have ridden trollies like you describe in San Francisco back in the 60s. I remember riding one through the Twin Peaks tunnel. Now that was an experience. I don't know the length of the tunnel but I would put it at least a mile. When the trolley entered the tunnel, the motorman would "open it up full throttle" and get the speed up to about 40 mph. It was noisy and scary! The car would rock from side to side and you could feel every track joint. Then, unexpected if you didn't know the route, he would slow down and stop at a small platform in the middle of the tunnel. There was either a stairway or elevator leading up to the surface.

The MAX light rail line in Portland passes through a 3 mile long tunnel with a rather large station in the middle. Elevators lead to the Oregon Zoo directly above. The trains get up to 55mph in the tunnel.
