All good guesses, but it's a bit more subtle than those. Read the calendar carefully!

The pen is on June 20, 2008. Is this significant?

Yes, but the year was only so that people could refer to their own calendars. The pen is covering something up.

Yes! Well done, Robleemom. I was poised to tell you you were so warm as to be positively incandescent, until you added the correct second half.

"Summer solstice" is hidden under the pen, and Bynx worked out what month it was. Curious that the book & film title are a fortnight late for D-Day. At 3 hourslong, some might say the endof the movie comes a bit late, but I supposesuch an epic event deserves an epic film.

Over here we just saw a major TV documentary "Bloody Omaha" about the Omaha Beach near-disaster, with many veteran interviews.
