Hm, I am very distracted by the softness/fuzzyness and my eyes hunt for the "safe spot". I would like to see a better DOF handling here with the person being "sharp" and the barracks more soft/blurred. Also the color of thechaplet sets a second "point of interest" mainly due to its "colorful appearance".

I'd either had a try with postprocessing, maybe b&w conversation to get rid of that chaplet presence or browse through the photos to find a shot with another aperture and where DOF is around your son.

Otherwise I can relate to your feelings, I probably would have been proud too.
