By the way, I think they are flushing the hydrant. Ours are done each year in our town. I can ask today what the purpose is.

Flushing the water system on a routine basis removes sediment from lines.

Yup, I agree with flushing the lines. The fire department doesn't want any sediment plugging up their pumps and nozzles when they are trying to fight a fire. In my neighborhood, when they flush the hydrants, they thoroughly inspect them to make sure the covers are not painted in place and stuck. They also make sure the valve is operating properly.

Great shot of a mundane and possibly messy job.

Very nice capture Walter. I wish there was a way for them to water our lawn when they purge the hydrant in front of our house!!!
