Hello all,

I'll love to share with you the background to this photo. Taken with my trust Fuji F601 point and shoot in Sep 2005.

I was at a staff retreat camp (early autumn) after doing about 6 children camps for the Christian charity organisation I used to work for in Romania. At this camp, I was sitting with the charity director (Sandor, a good friend of mine) outside. We were discussing some work and camp things... it was in the early evening... a lovely temperature, and peaceful, fresh air.

In countryside Transylvanian (Romania) about 100km from the nearest large town. We were facing north east (I just worked it out now... from my geography) - and in the matter of about 20 minutes while we were talking - this cloud (in the photo below) appeared. At first as a column, and then flattening out on top. We both stopped talking just to admire this unique cloud and it's unusual ... but ominous shape! (it was at this stage that I took the photo).

Up to that point we had been discussing how to attract people to support the Romanian charity organisation and work we were doing - helping alcoholics recover and supporting those affected by alcoholism themselves or within their families. Then Sandor (he's a local from Romania) said: "but how are we going to convince people to come to Romania when they have nuclear bombs going off everywhere... and they can't even conceal it?!" We both had a good laugh at this.... (Of course it's just a natural cloud - that I guess particular weather patterns or air movements created into this shape!)

Anyway... now that you have the background story, I hope you enjoy the photo itself!

Happy viewing....

Paul

That looks to me more like the smoke column from a brush fire. I have seen many smoke columns behave exactly as this photo shows.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for looking and appreciating the story.

Hi Cal,

Yes, it looks very similar to a smoke column. But this wasn't a smoke column, because there were several other clouds in the sky that evening and this particular cloud had the exact same colour & texture... and the bottom "tail" of the cloud appeared as it was moved by the slight wind. Also there is a thermal lake and plain over that range of hills the photo shows - and we travelled past that later, and a fire of that magnitude would have been easily spotted. Romania very VERY rarely has bush fires. It receives too much rainfall.

As I'm from Australia.... I'm very accustomed to bush fires and smoke columns. It didn't behave in a manner like smoke at all, though at the stage of the photo it certainly looks like one!
