Whether there realy were tunnels connecting the casinos in the 30's, I have never seen a convincing answer. There definitely were tunnels under the streets, but primarily dealing with channeling the hot water from the springs. However, about some things there is no controversy. When Capone and his entourage came to Hot Springs, they always stayed at the luxurious Arlington Hotel, directly across the street from the Southern Club. Capone reserved the entire fourth floor whenever he was in town, and could often be seen in the afternoons, relaxing on the Arlington's wide verandas.

The Arlington Capone knew was the third one on the same location. The first was built in 1875 and served till it's replacement by a mammoth Victorian structure in the 1890's.

Capone's Arlington was a beautiful 484-room hotel built in 1923 after the second Arlington was destroyed by fire. Today, she is still a classy lady in the tradition of the old grand hotels. (My wife and I even spent our honeymoon there....many years before the thought of living in Hot Springs ever occurred to either of us.)

(Note: Sorry about the featureless sky, but Saturday was a dismal, foggy day here.)

Trojansoc,

The stature of the buldings have survived their faded images. Yes, the most recent Hotel still retains some of the class.

Thanks for sharing.
