The ability Mother Nature has to line things up in perfect rows has me in constant wonder. Here's an Anthurium growing in my patch; I hope it's "nose" qualifies it for this challenge.

Hawaii built,

Nice classic shot. It's difficult to strike the right balance between the two shades of lighting on the spadix. You were able to capture quite a bit of detail.

thanks selvin!
this was actually an excercise in contrasty compositions.... trying to get both dark objects and light objects properly exposed. mostly, i just walked around my house looking for light and dark - i.e. snapping some shots of the shadow my matsu tree casts on my yard.

the weather has been great for getting outside and walking around with the minolta in hand. iit helps when my anthuriums and bromeliads are in full bloom. 'm heading out to the kona side for the day tomorrow; it's too beautiful outside to stay home and clean house :-)

Beautiful shot of the flower.

A technique which I have not tried, is to take two shots without moving the camera. In the first shot you expose for the bright areas and the second shot you expose for the dark areas. The two shots are then combined in PS or whatever editor you use.

Cal is referring to HDR photography. A great way to take your pictures when the light is variable from very bright to very dark.

Is it just me or is your photo of the flower somewhat pornographic? Reminds me of S&M for some reason.

Actually, looking at Hawaii-Built's avatar portrait, I think it's just a new self-portrait, and he/she has been sunbathing too long in that Pacific sunshine. I bet you droop a bit after a hard day lying on the beach. I do, and I don't even get chance to do the sunbathing bit.
