Here is my best moon shot. Nikon D100, Nikkor 70-300mm lens, 2x extender. Automatic program mode, spot metered, ISO 1000, 1/320, f5.6, manual focus, self timer, Manfrotto tripod with 3-way head. This was taken last night. I shot about ten shots over the period of an hour. This is the sharpest one. As heavy as the Manfrotto tripod is, I still got a lot of shake. It was very difficult to get the target for the spot metering mode lined up on the moon. Once I got it there, I used the 10-second self-timer to minimize vibration. Cropped and sharpened in Paint Shop Pro X.

Have you tried with the mirror up? It cuts the vibration. I just posted one using a Nikon 300mm F4 lens and a 2X teleconverter. I just got the lens and it has a sharpness problem so will get fixed but I posted it anyway. I used a cable release and the mrror up on the D300.

The only way the mirror can be locked up on the D100 is by connecting a special maintenance cable and using special software. It can't be done in the field.
