Back from my birthday bash weekend in San Diego, including a visit to the world famous Zoo. Here's a meerkat couple I caught sunning themselves.

The meerkat or suricate Suricata suricatta is a small mammal and a member of the mongoose family. It inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang", or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains around 20 meerkats at a time, but some superfamilies have had 50 or more. Meerkats have an average life span of 12-14 years.

Canon 5D, 100-400L lens.

OK, here's another little guy (gal?). This one without a mate, apparently.

Meercats are wonderfull little critters. They are highly social and highly territorial. Animal Planet (cable channel) has been running a series called "Meercat Manor" for the last several years. This show follows the daily life and struggles of several "families" of meercats in Africa, I think. They're little but they work hard to preserve their way of life and defend themselves from other families. It's a great series.

The personality of the closest meerkat is emphasized even more by the blurring of the second meerkat.

Thanks for the background materiak always interesting to read.
