The staircase sparked an association with a shot I posted in the last challenge, but I thought B&W might be more effective.

It almost looks like a rooster. Tell us how you did it. I assume you used the zoom tool in swirl mode and I am guessing you used the cat image as a texture to overlay the swirled image. Am I anywhere close?

Not quite so fancy as you suggest. I just used the lasso selection tool on the cat's eye in my photo and pasted it as a new layer, adjusted it to the right size and shape, flattened....then applied the twirl zoom, excluding all the center except right at the edge so that it would be a smooth blend. After everything else was done, I made the B&W conversion with the B&W Film tool in PSP 12.
