This first shot is one of my first out of my Nikon D40, my first dSLR, which I got in May. I took to the relative safety of hiding behind the pitching net my son was throwing at and caught him just after he released the ball.

This one I took at one of my son's baseball games this summer. He and the other boy were having what was apparently a very funny conversation as they walked from the dugout to their positions. I have a series of 5-6 shots of this conversation. I will always be curious what they were talking about.

Both are wonderful shots. I love the DOF.

Excellent! I'd like to see #2 with another composition, your son is in the image center... would like to see him a bit more to the left/right (rule of thirds approach for example). I agree on the DOF. Well done!

Very nice shots. Something to consider - shooting portrait orientation. Especially on shot 1 - having more of your son's body would, IMO, be more interesting than showing more of the background. In other words, the action is what's interesting - so orient the camera so the action best fits in the frame. Really like shot 2 - great capture.

I like both shots but I agree that the portrait (vertical) orientation might be a little better. I would have to see it for comparison.

Thanks for looking all. I agree getting a portrait orientation would have been better on #1.

#2 I cropped down to get just the two boys walking. There are a couple of other kids far in the background that I found distracting. Here's the original:
