In the last few days I visited old friends from my rock-climbing days, and I went with them to one of their twice-weekly climbing wall sessions. I'd love to have had a go.

However, this time I could with good credibility use the 'wrong footwear' excuse for chickening out of a climb, or at least leading one, as all my right toes are now missing, and I'd have needed even more specialised footwear than usual. Next time, I might consider renting two different sizes of rock boot. However such boots have pretty pointy toes, unlike my blunt foot.

This route isn't as easy as it looks, because it's vertical (or "gentle slab angle", as my hardest leader used to say when the route stopped overhanging), and because you're only supposed to use one colour of hold at a time.

For reasons I can't fathom, the three shots, at f/2.8 aperture priority, ISO400, 5.85/33mm equiv., received 1/50, 1/40, 1/30s, all within a minute....

Top jug...

Alan,

I stand like a fool having now read what the image is about.

I prefer the other interpretation since it demonstrates the challenge more explicitly. I found it difficult to differentiate the focus points in the shots. The ear seemed to be always in focus.
