There's one fine modern building (if 39 years old is modern) in Wrexham. It's 'Waterworld', generally known as "The Swimming Pool", or more prosaically "The Baths". It'sa striking building from 1970, with a 'hyperbolic paraboloidal' roof. As I write this in preparation for posting tomorrow, my family are swimming there right now.

It's badly in need of a good scrub and lick of paint, but I like it.

When I enquired of an attendant, I was told "there are only two buildings this shape in the world". This turned out to be very untrue - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddle_roof

It's famous as an example of Wrexham's 'brilliant' planning. The pool is short of Olympic length by a couple of inches.

On the right, the hideous example of (I imagine) 1960's concrete brutality is the police headquarters. It's on stilts you can't see, so it looks as though it could walk after you like an alien spacecraft.

I have always found this juxtaposition of the best and the worst rather macabre. But the new 'Titanic' mall (actually called 'Eagle's Meadow') runs it close.

It's difficult to find a viewpoint where you can see it all. This is an in-camera panorama I took in June, plus the entrance frontage.
