From Nantwich I travelled south westwards to Whitchurch, another ancient market town, about 10 miles south of my home village. Remarkably, I think I've never travelled that route before in my 34 years in this part of the world.

It claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited town in Shropshire, and was important in Roman times when it was known as 'Mediolanum', standing about half-way between the important centres of Wroxeter (Shrewsbury) and Deva (Chester). It is still important as the 'Home of the Tower Clock', because the clockmaker J.B.Joyce has been building such timepieces there since 1690, including the clock of Big Ben, and tower clocks all over the world.

In 1994, presumably to celebrate the tercentenary of the firm, this clock was erected. It bears the four historic names of the town below its four faces. 'Westune' was the Saxon name, and Album Monasterium (which presumably had a white church) was the Norman.

After Whitchurch I went north-west to Wrexham which you've already seen for the shopping, and then on to Chester to the north, which I'll show you tomorrow.

Here are two more faces. Note that the sun's shining. Shortly before I'd been drenched by a heavy shower. It's a hard life as a roving photo-reporter.

Really good photos of what looks to be a very interesting town.
