Here in Huntington Beach we share at least one thing with Kansans. We both see wide horizons, with few tall obstacles. So, this will be an interesting challenge for me, as we don't have any skyscrapers, much less grain elevators. What we do have plenty of are some rather tall palm trees.

Down by the pier the tallest thing is the observation tower that is used to monitor the surfers and swimmers. It sits higher (on the pier, itself) than the lifeguard towers on the beach, so they can spot trouble a lot quicker. It sort of resembles an air traffic control tower. I took this just before sunset...thus the shadow of the lamppost.

Nice job, Walter. Perhaps next time you can try getting closer to the subject for an even more vertical view--landscaping, etc. permitting.

walter,

I agree with you, there aren't too many high vertical vantage points in your part of the world. It suddenly occured to me why you folks and many parts of Southern Florida shy away from coconut palm trees.

The imminent danger posed by falling coconuts is too much liability for the city fathers. Unfortunately, Hawaii's image of swaying coco palms will never allow us to stray from that path.

Aloha

The main hazard from coconuts round here is shrapnel injuries when trying to open them with an axe. I need some machete lessons from the Pacific Islands. Fine shots, as ever, Walter.

Cal, actually I was standing at the very base of both subjects. As you can see, the tower flairs out at the base, and I was up against the foundation.

The tower remines me of the book 1984, with big brother watching you.
