With camera on tripod I held a zoom lens turned backward up against the lens of the camera. This got in good and close.

In this case I hand held the camera. Not a good idea.

Do you have a shot of the setup? What kind of zoom lens and camera? How do you focus?

Sorry Doc I dont have a shot of the setup. The lens I used was a 75 to 210 Zoom from my 35mm Pentax. To focus, the zoom slides down so in longest position I just let it slide until its in focus. The lens is almost touching the subject when its time to shoot. The camera I used was my Fuji S700 point and shoot.

I recognize the first photo as a coin but the second eludes me.

I have never tried the reverse lens technique. It seems so "kludgy" to me. I'll stick to my extension tubes.

Right you are Cal. Its a 25 cent coin with the state of Illinois on the back. Thats Lincoln standing inside the Illinois boundary. Now the second pick should is for you nail biters out there.

I'm assuming then that the cutting surface shown is on the business end of a set of nail clippers.
