Part of the mine draw works at Bodie, CA ghost town.

Thats a nice shot. Great depth of field. It could do with a bit more saturation IMO. But the composition works and nothing to complain about.

Very nice composition. This shot really draws you in an give lots to look at. I agree with Bynx, a little more saturation would make it pop a bit more.

I think I would either beef the saturation up or go the other way and convert to B&W

I quite like it as it is, because, living as I do in a perpetually green and wet land, it speaks volubly to me of hot dry places. I'd rather be here than there.

Our coal miners of olden days (which finished with Margaret Thatcher in the 1980's) were cold, wet and poor, rather than hot, dry and poor.

Well the other edit is nice but it does not exactly impart the idea that you are in a desert. Deserts are not particularly green or any strong color. The original photo looks washed out because it is. The sun was high and about 2:00 PM. Here is another edit with more saturation.
