Default Silhouette - Joshua Tree

Silhouette of Joshua Tree against a star trail background. A two-hour exposure worth the sleepless night!

I was thinking of driving out there this weekend, but rain is coming. Did you hear any creatures while you were out there? Nicely done.

The photo was taken in February. At 4000+ feet the nights are close to the freezing point, their was not much animal activity.

Oooh - very cool! Where was this taken - I keep wanting to go out sometime and take pictures of the Kelso Dunes and perhaps camp at the Hole in the Wall Campground, but still haven't made the effort. Is this around there? Not that it's all that difficult to find Joshua Trees in lots of other locations, just that I'd like an excuse for an overnight trip to the area.

The picture was taken at the Sheep Pass campground in Joshua Tree National Park. Funny you should mentioned the Kelso Dunes, my avatar was taken from the top of one of the ridges there. The wind was howling and sand was a major issue to contend with. If you climb the dunes make sure your camera is well protected.

Kelso and Hole in the Wall are in the Mojave Preserve, about 2-3 hours drive northeast of Joshua Tree, well worth the visit. The Mojave Preserve is a treasure trove of Joshua trees particularly near Cima Dome. No entrance fee either!

If you camp at Hole in the Wall make sure you bring plenty of supplies. The nearest town is Baker (about an hours drive) and it doesn't offer very much except perhaps for the world's largest (rectal) thermometer.
