Default Household Abstract: Macadamia nuts

Not too abstract but an intimate look at the macadamia nut which has legendary popularity among nut afficianados.

This nut has probably the hardest shell of any common nuts. It requires special machinery to crack the nuts. If you were to try it would require a hammer and a deft touch to avoid smashing the kernel to smithereens while cracking the shell.

I used an Australian screw type invention to crack these without destroying the kernel with a hammer.

I have never seen Macadamia nuts in the shell, only the meats. Can you show us a shot of uncracked shells to show what they look like?

Good job.

They look like they are covered in chocolate. That's the hard shell, though?

Calr, Vanessa,

Yep, that's the shell you see in the photos. Many have never seen the inside of the nut only the outside dipped in chocolate.

Cal,

Here's a shot of the nuts from which the submission was cropped.

I love them by the handful but they are probably the most expensive nut both on the mainland and in Hawaii.

Thanks for posting the second shot, Selvin.
