Default Waves and Ripples - About to make ripples...

Even though the sun was setting and the temperatures are around freezing here in Ottawa it does not stop my dog Rain from jumping in and going for a swim (brrrrrr) in the beautiful Ottawa River.

There're already ripples there so this qualifies but wish the second shot had shown the effect of the stick in the water. The setting sun really drowns out everything.

I was going for silhouette style shots as well...I have never taken a silhouette shot before so tips on improving that end of the photo as well would be nice...

Johnny...,
You've got a lot of things working against you for a good silhouette. The setting sun facing you is going to be really hard to compensate for. The dog is in motion which makes it difficult to get exposure correct given the lighting conditions.
One classic method is to take two pics. One exposed to get the sunset and the other exposed to get the dog and then merge them. I few mid-high end SLR's will allow for automatic generation of the two pics.

The bottom line is that with a single shot only you have to be really lucky to hit the sweet spot which provides a great doggy silhouette and a nicely exposed sunset especially since the dog is jumping all over.

Cheers.
