Default Give us your Favorites: Northern Lights

Churchill, Manitoba is the polar bear capital of the world. Though I did see my share of bears when I was there last August, this picture of the northern lights is my favorite.

Thanks, Cal. It was a beautiful night and with no polar bears around I could concentrate on photographing the phenomena. Just to be on the safe side, I had a "bear guard" with me. A bear guard is someone (with a shotgun) on the lookout for bears. This allows researchers (and photographers) to concentrate on their work.

Wow, spectacular 'sweep of colour' of the northern lights.

I've only seen them a handfull of times when I was in northern Europe in the 90's.

So thanks for sharing... also the fact about 'bear guards' - well I'll keep that in mind should I ever be up that way! (Are they expensive to hire?!)

I did some reading about Churchill, Manitoba, which was interesting, thanks!

Always dreamed of seeing these in real life. Your shot may well be the closest I'll come to this. Frigid nights are an anathema to a tropical boy.
Superb capture.

Like selvin, this is something on my "bucket list". I have always wanted to witness the northern lights....but i'd like to do it without a "bear guard", however. LOL

Beautiful shot. It looks like it is bending in reverence to the earth.
