Default Shadows - King of the Hill

This is the only one I ever took of a shadow. The story is better than the picture.

Some time ago I did a photoessay on territorial behavior in Mourning Cloak butterflies. The territory holder perches on the highest point around - usually a treetop - from which he watches for - and chases - other Mourning Cloaks that invade his territory. I was standing in an open spot watching and photographing his antics (and thus was the tallest thing there) when this guy flew over and sat down on my hat to watch for his nemesis. Or was he trying to assert his dominance over me? Anyway, this was the only way I could get a picture to document the event. His shadow is marked by the arrow - the rest is my head and hat.

LOL! That is a cute story and a clever way of documenting the incident. Amazing that the butterfly actually landed on your hat - I've never had anything like that happen.
