Default Flora: Prairie Crocus

On the Canadian Prairies the first sign of spring is the prairie crocus. This flower is the first to bloom after our harsh winters and is a welcome sign for better things to come. The "fur" covering the flower protects it from the cool, sometimes frosty, nights. The ant was just passing through.

The fuzziness really stands out and as you noted makes sense as a protective cover.

Fascinating! I wouldn't call it a beautiful flower in the sense that many roses are, but it's very interesting. Really like the picture.

Yeah, this flower cannot compete with the beauty of roses (hence no Crocus Bowl parades!) but it is a lovely site to see after a long cold winter.
