I have seen many lighthouses on the Oregon and California coast but that's the first one I've seen with curtains!! Those giant Fresnel lenses are really impressive. It is amazing how they concentrate the light (originally from an oil or gas lamp) so that it could be seen many miles to sea.

Calr,

If memory serves me correctly this is the Heceta Head light in Oregon. The curtains were pretty common. At one time there was a fear that the concentrated light would catch the forest on fire on the landward side of the lights. Some lighthouses actually had a piece of polished copper placed on the landward side to act as a reflector.

Regards,
Bill

Cool shot! There's something about fresnel lenses that I find fascinating.

Nice choice of POV, time of day and exposure to capture both the bright and subtle colors. I always thought the curtains were for the lighthouse keeper to entertain the locals with shadow puppet shows.
