I think I'll keep it both ways - one where I crop the two outside stripes and one where I leave them in. I like penolta's suggestion of putting a black frame around it, it wouldn't be so confusing when seen on the lighter background.

After the suggestions and confusion here, I went back and did two edits. This one has the two side striped cropped out:

And one with the black border:

Which looks better?

i like them both but i think the top one looks slightly better, its just a shame the glass distorts the straight line in the middle which becomes more apparant in the cropped photo

I like both of the cropped photos.

There have been several comments about symmetry in this discussion. Symmetry is not required in a good photo. Think about the rule of thirds. Imagine two vertical lines that divide the scene into three parts. Now imagine two horizontal lines that divide the scene into three parts. The rule of thirds says put your subject at the intersection of one of the vertical lines and one of the horizontal lines. This is not a hard rule but but makes for some beautiful shots.

In the case of this subject, the rule of thirds is probably not appropriate and symmetry works well.

Harriet, for the same reason, you need the black border on the cropped version, or half of the glass is left hanging out in space on the light background! I don't think the black actually border needs to be so thick on either version, though. I do think the cropped version is the better of the two.
