Default Challenge: 2/25 - 3/2/04 "Breaking Things"

Contrary to rumor and popular opinion, there are no rules of composition. Guidelines, yes; rules, no. The most often repeated of these is the Rule of Thirds.

As rules go, this is a pretty decent one, and it should be studied, but once it’s understood, you have every right to break it when it suits your purposes. This week’s challenge is to gain an understanding of the Rule of Thirds by breaking it.

You have a choice here. You can strive to create a good composition that ignores the rule, or you can deliberately produce a bad photo, showing in a contrary sort of way why the rule works.

Remember not to post your photo in this thread. Create a separate post, and in the subject line, just put the name of the challenge, in this case, “Breaking Things.” If you want to add a little something after the name of the challenge, feel free.

Below are some links to teach you, refresh your memory, or to just use as a time filler while you think up a good (or really bad) photo:

And an article on breaking the rules:

One, two, three…ANARCHY!

Great Site this http://photoinf.com/ Barbara ! Thanx.

Now it will take a lot of time to learn all of the rules, understand them, and finally break them in a conscious way

Well, no, the challenge you were just talking about this week

is only related to Breaking The Rule Of Thirds , ain't it ?

It took me a long time to write up this challenge because I got so caught up in those Web sites. There were even more that I found, but I finally had to pick and choose, trying to keep the links relevant to the specific subject and not to all aspects of composition.

Woah, I see alot of thought has been put into this week's topic/challenge. Thank you Barbara, I am greatful for you presenting this opportunity for me to further develop my understanding of photography and composition (previous to this, all I've heard of was the "rule" of thirds which I found kinda dorky anyways).

Please remember that I'm in no way an expert--there are far better photographers on this forum. When I present a challenge, I'm challenging myself, too.
