Default Breaking things

This is my son, dead center. I always take pics like this. Unlike many of you, I am not trained in the rule of thirds and it is not automatic. Taking pics dead center is!!! I actually don't think it is all that bad, but what could I have done to make it better? BTW, I call this the "You Talkin' to Me?" pose. Thanks in advance for your help!

That's a really cute and funny picture. If anything can break the rule of thirds, it's the human face and, in particular, a baby's face. A bit of cropping, mostly on the right side to my way of thinking, would focus in even better on that little guy. Unfortunately, cropping would also bring it into the realm of thirds.

I would hold the camera vertical and fill the frame with the child then no cropping is necessary. IMHO!

Cute boy!

Thanks guys! I actually like the one where he is in the center better. Is this just my untrained eye? I also agree that vertical would have been the way to go. I just love photographing babies, but they can be tough subjects. I take that back, TODDLERS are the worst. I am satisfied with a pic if I can even get my 20 mos. old to stand still and look somewhat in the direction of the camera!

And on top of what Digcamfan said, you've met the challenge. Most of the rest of us failed. It's been an odd sort of challenge, trying to succeed by failing, hasn't it?
