Default Divine intervention prevents breaking rule of thirds

I really did have good - well, that is, bad - intentions. The idea was to place the top of the birdbath across the center of the image, and then center the pedastal. Nothing on those one third lines or intersections. The idea faintly brewing was to use the resulting symmetry to enhance the solidity of the birdbath against the delicate foliage.

But then some compulsion took me, and without thinking my hand reached out, grabbed the statue of St. Francis from the dank spot where he had been quietly contempating the garden for many months, and plunked him down at the base of the birdbath. And lo, he ended up right at the divine intersection. What is a photographer to do in the face of forces like these?

Neat photo, I like. Perharps I would crop a little off the top, then you would really be a sinner.

I like the mutted colors.

No, Rod, I think he's already a true sinner, but we have to give him points for confessing his sins.

What's great about this post is that it clearly shows what could have happened without the rule, then what happens by using the rule. The photo is a complete lesson in itself. (Not to mention a truly good photo, too.)

But I don't know about this divine intervention thing. Are you sure it wasn't the  who made you do it?

Thanks for the nice comments, all. I think Barbara, perceptive as usual, is correct about the s  urce of inspiration here, and Rod is right on with his suggestion for improvement by cropping part of the top.
