Default Belle Fourche

Spotted this sign in Belle Fourche ( pronounced "Bell Foosh"), South Dakota on one of our bike trips to Sturgis. This was on the way to Devil's Tower, in Wyoming.

I was born in South Dakota and lived on a farm near Aberdeen until I was nine. I may have visited Bell Fourche as a child but I don't remember. I remember people talking about it. That was in the early fifties and there were only 48 states at the time. We moved to California in 1954. If you are a good math student, you may have figured out that I will be 70 in a few weeks.

The western part of the state is lovely, and the scenery can't be beat. I told my wife I wouldn't mind living there, but we would have to be snow birds. I can't even imagine how cold it gets there in winter. Florida has spoiled me, I'm afraid.

Very nice.
We were in Arkansas when the kids were young and visited the Beginning Point of the Louisiana Purchase Survey at the Louisiana Purchase State Park. It is in the middle of a swamp and you walk on a boardwalk trail to the marker. It was kind of creepy to be in the middle of that swamp, so quite and eerie.

Aberdeen is on the Eastern edge of SD. I remember my mother showing photos of walking over the top of a five-foot picket fence in the snow drifts. Typically, the snow drifts were between two feet and six feet.

For most of my life since leaving South Dakota, I have often said "South Dakota is a good place to be from...far from!"

If I ruffled some feathers, here, I apologize. As Hawgwild said, some parts of SD are nice, others are....

Seems to me my family and I may have driven nearby Belle Fourche on our way across the US. All I can remember from that trip about S, Dakota was the seeming endlessness of the landscape. Many times we were the only ones on the road between the smaller towns. If you like isolation, it's a wonderful place.
