Default CHALLENGE: 3/10/04 - 3/16/04 "Color-Blind"

If you were color-blind and someone dumped red and green beads in front of you,
requesting that you make a necklace of alternating colors, could you do it?
Here's the answer:

This isn’t a problem exclusive to beads. Crimson roses disappear into the green leaves, Grandpa’s blue sweater fades into his maroon recliner, jelly beans lose their appeal.

This week’s challenge is to create a black-and-white photo from a color original, trying to get high contrast (well-defined blacks, whites, and shades of gray) without resorting to Photoshop tricks. You’ll probably have to tweak using Levels, Curves, or Contrast, particularly if you shoot in RAW mode, but if you have to do a lot of fiddling, it means the original didn’t have the high contrast you were shooting for.

Don’t forget composition in your rush to high contrast. Without color to carry some of the weight, composition really counts.

Required:

(1) Post both the original and the b&w version so we can all study and learn from each other.

(2) Tell us your method of converting to black and white. Different methods can reap different results.

(3) No portraits of people. The human face may love black and white, but portraits also involve very specific issues of positioning and lighting. We don’t want to go there right now.

(4) As always start your subject line with the name of the challenge, in this case, “Color-Blind.”

I don't have photoshop, so am I to assume that, since my software doesn't have a magic button that says "Convert to black and white" I am OK using whatever filters are necessary and available?

I am slightly colorblind so this should be right up my alley!

Monkey143, what software are you using? I imagine it's capable of a simple conversion to black & white and also allows you to touch up contrast.

Digcamfan--I'm really dense this morning. You'll have to spell it out for me.
