I am Christian and find the Jewish fascinating. I think they have the right idea on a lot of the OT stuff that we don't focus on anymore - our loss.

Hope I didn't offend anyone with my religious comment/enthusiasm. I apologize if I did, and will stick to the topic.

A short history of the dreidel and Chanukah. Norm has the wording right, but it means the victory of the Macabees over the Syrian king, Antiochus. The king had ordered the Jewish people to give up their religion and had put idols in the temple. The Jewish people revolted and forced the Syrians out of Isreal. I do not know who or when the dreidel was created, but it is a game only played at Chanukah. I had no hidden meaing when I took the image. I just had two dreidels of different sizes and thought the image would look good for this challenge. But I have enjoyed the conversation and the comments.

Shin shin, put one in!

BTW, that's a Nun and not a Gimel. A Gimel has a little "leg" sticking out.

I don't have one with me at the moment, but I am sure Gilbert can get us a shot of all four sides.

OK Be glad to do it. I will shoot and post it later tonight when I get home. One of each side with the proper name.

Not only is this a good photo in its own right, but when a photo inspires inquiry and conversation, it's just that much better.

Ok. Here are the four sides of dreidel:

Hey:

Gimel:

Nun: (does not have a"leg" like Gimel)

I am glad I got to share some of this with you.

I'm glad that you did. Somewhere in this house is a dreidel, but it's just a stupid-looking blue plastic thing. I like the wooden ones; they have far more class.
