Oh, this is nice. I can feel the cold water and the slippery fish.

I can feel the weighted line in my hands, holding the three-pronged hook to throw into the water. I can feel the cold wind pull at my jacket. Such memories. In that environment, you only need a hook... bait is pointless!

Though it's an excellent photo, the appeal to the senses isn't universal. Not being much of a "water" girl (other than loving the ocean and the Hudson River), I can't seem to hear, smell, or touch anything in the picture.

Understand, this isn't a criticism of the photo itself; instead, it's to bring out the fact that, no matter what we do in a photo to try to evoke more than the sense of sight, it simply cannot work for each and every viewer.

I remember my first time at Pymatuming over fifty years ago. There used to be a sign that said " See the ducks walk on the fishes backs" They used to sell old bread to feed the fish, wow talk about a feeding frenzy. They curtailed bread sales cause people were throwing wrappers in the laked, killing fish. They still sell fish food in a biodegradeable container but its not the same as watching them fight over bread! As I write this I can hear them gulp and beg for food but most of all I can smell them, that odor that permeates your clothes and envades your sinus cavities so you smell them much afer you have gone elsewhere. Too bad you didn't get in this Barbara, it was a real stinker!

Now that I know, I'm utterly pleased I have no memory of such a stench. My most recent encounter with the unendurable was at a buffalo farm where the animal aroma was mixed with that of silage. Only those who've experienced this will understand why it took 24 hours to stop thinking I was still smelling it.
