Default Making sense of the senses

This has turned out to be a very difficult and sometimes confusing challenge. I'm not sure I should have posted it at all, but then again, maybe we've all learned something important. Because of our differences, one person smells a rose, another sees it, a third (me, for instance) tastes it.

Rod came bustling onto the scene with a fascinating piece about synesthesia, something that, in its extreme form, causes a person's senses to seem mixed up. He tastes the brilliance of red, she hears the softness of fur. My own son often sees music as colors, in particular, chords.

When we're trying to ellicit a specific sense with a photo, who knows what havoc we might wreak? You flare your nostrils, the person looking over your shoulder develops dilated pupils, someone nearby hears Beethoven. What a mess.

But...

What if your photo has a targeted audience? What if your picture of bread hot from the oven is be printed in Gourmet magazine? What if your photo of a new, gleaming (and very expensive) Gibson is destined for Guitar Player? Not quite a mess anymore, right?

Sometimes we just have to pick our audience lest we want to deal with a heap of ho-hums. Personally, I'd rather someone hated my photo. I think.

Maybe not.

I do what your son does, Barb- only I see words as words with colors. Days of the week have different colors and textures.

And what about that elusive sixth sense? You know, that's the pesky one telling you who's ringing your phone, but sometimes it's not so very pesky at all. I once was saved from sure death by car accident when a vision told me what lay up ahead and over a rise. I can still taste the shock of what almost happened.

Do our bodies collect information that's processed without first passing through the cognitive parts of our brains? Come to think of it, we react to heat without first thinking, "Hot!"

I wonder if Rod will come up with some more interesting tidbits for us to munch on.
