This portrait is of my grandfather, on my father's side. It was taken approximately 1917, so he would have been about 17 at the time. He was just a private in the regular old army. He did go to Europe in WWI. (my grandmother had some rather graphic pictures of trenches... don't know what became of those... but I can assure you they were very sobering.. ) I found the "hankie" folded up inside his "Soldier's Hand Book" (revised 1908).

"JSS to SM".... JSS was my grandfather... guessing it was to his sweatheart or possibly his first wife... The wedding post is actually his 2nd wedding... (1st wife died during child birth )
