Default DOF - Flower

Hi, this is my first post here.

I'm not able to adjust the DOF with my camera but it has a macro mode which I've abused here. Click the small images to see a larger one. I've only edited image size.
I prefer the fist image by miles.

I prefer the first image, too, but not by miles because the second image is also done well. Changing the focus when using a narrow DOF can create some amazing differences in composition and meaning.

And welcome to the gang!

Default DOF

I also perfer the 1st image. Based on the DOF challenge it seems to be easier to create an image that "works" when the forward elements in the image are in focus and the background elements are out of focus.

Ditto to what Rod said. Somewhere else this past week, it was discussed how focusing on the nearest object matches how we most often see. I just this minute concentrated on how my keyboard (which is closer to me) appears when I'm focused on the monitor. The keyboard is blurry, but because the monitor is in the center of my visual circle, it seems natural. This notion can be transferred to photos of flowers where the center of the bloom is in sharp focus and then the petals slowly fade away. It looks natural to our eyes.

This is all me just thinking out loud. I should mull this over some more. :?
